Jeremy Barnett appointed techical adviser to IT courts project

Jeremy Barnett has been appointed as the technical adviser to Lord Justice Fulford who is heading the Common Platform Working Group that is examining the efficiency of the Criminal Justice System for the President of the Queens Bench Division, Lord Justice Leveson.

For 5 years, Jeremy was the visiting Professor of Law Informatics at Leeds University where he lead the Court 21 research group on Virtual Courts and Trials on behalf of the departments of Law, Computing and the Leeds University Business School, together with the Courtroom 21 project at the William and Mary School of Law at Williamsburg VA, established by Professor Frederick Lederer.

Court 21 collaborated with the Courtroom 21 on a number of ground breaking demonstrations of the use of technology in court, including the first time that three court centres were joined by video conferencing. This demonstration was broadcast live on US televsion. Other demonstrations included the use of three D modelling in remote locations, to show how a jury or mediator could make better decisions by use of IT than could be made from a physical presence in the courtroom.

Jeremy then became a leading member of the new Online Dispute Resolution academic community led by Professor Ethan Katsh, and contributed to a number of papers and conferences that was investigating the advantages of asyncronous communication as a means of settling transactions that had been conducted on platforms such as Ebay and Amazon.

Together with Professor Pete Dew, he authored ‘E Legal Services, Speeding up Justice for B2B systems’ which proposed an architecture to deal with discovery and dislosure of large data sets from disputes that had arisen in new Business to Business market places. The platform included elements of Artificial Intelligence legal reasoning and decision making that had been developed by sites such as Smartsettle, and based on research conducted by Professor John Zeleznikow.√جª¬ø
