Trading Standards Cut by 40% | Trading Standards Lawyer

The Trading Standards Insitute have today warned that deep cuts in the budgets for Trading Standards services have resulted in a massive reduction in the services provided to protect consumers.

Practitioners in trading standards law, who regularly deal with counterfeitting, toy safety, food safety and other aspects of consumer protection, have noticed that there has been a significant reduction in activity over the past 2 -3 years. These concerns have been confirmed today by an announcement from the Tradiing Standards Insitute which is no doubt aimed at raising public awareness about the range of activities that are conducted on a routine basis to protect consumers.

Recent announcements on the TSI website http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/√جª¬ø show the types of investigations that are currently being concucted:

  • The approval of code of conduct that was previously managed by the OFT for Vehicle Warranty Products
  • Continued prosecution of Fireworks sellers for who store their products in unsafe containers.
  • Music Piracy
  • A new ‘Estates Agents team who will investigate breaches of the Estates Agents Act 1979 that regulate the conduct of those involved in property sales transactions.
